Jesus Heals a String of People
The Lord continues to be ruthless with my unbelief that racks me...and I can tell that He is uprooting it piece by piece as I yield to Him and actually come to grips with the reality and bare-bones of the truth, particularly in the life of Jesus. Either what He said and did was true, or it wasn't. We must come to grips with the multitudes of people Jesus healed.
Reading through Mt. 8-9 today, I want to make some observations about the goodness of God through Jesus. Since Jesus is the exact representation of the nature of God, everything that He did demonstrates the Father's heart. There is not ONE person who ever came to Jesus for healing or to be raised from the dead who wasn't healed or raised. NOT ONE. This is a list of the people who were healed/raised by Jesus just in these 2 chapters, which actually set the stage for the disciples to be then sent out after having witnessed these miracles and teachings of Jesus. List: 1. Leper (Mt. 8:1-4). Observations: The leper demonstrated faith in Jesus and worship (he bowed down before Him). IF You are willing, you can make me clean. Jesus touched him and he was healed. 2. Centurion's paralyzed servant (Mt. 8:5-13). Observations: The centurion came to Jesus on behalf of his servant who was paralyzed. He understood authority and his own undeserved-ness in having Jesus actually come to his house. Jesus was astonished at this man's faith because he told Him to simply speak the word, and he would be healed. Jesus said something strikingly convicting (8:13), " 'Go; it shall be done for you AS you have believed.' " The word "AS" is an equal sign. AS the centurion believed, so it occurred. What we believe WILL affect the outcome. If we believe that God is NOT good, and that He does NOT want to heal, we will be bound by the lie. This centurion DID believe Jesus' word and nature, and it was done for him accordingly. 3. Peter's mother in law with a fever (Mt. 8:14-15). Observations: In this situation, the person wasn't brought to Jesus...He just saw her when he went into Peter's house, and simply laid His hand on her, and the fever was healed. This validates the fact that it doesn't matter how big or small the sickness appears to be...the Lord's will is to heal. Also, it says that the "fever left her." I wonder if this was an evil spirit that caused it. It doesn't say. 4. Many demon-possessed and sick people (Mt. 8:16-17). Observations: These people WERE brought to Jesus. It doesn't even say He prayed...He simply exercised His authority that His Father gave Him under the anointing of the Holy Spirit to send away the demons and pronounce healing to them. It says that Jesus "healed ALL who were ill." It doesn't get any clearer than that. If we've seen Jesus, then we've seen the Father. The Father doesn't change, and neither does Jesus. It is God's will to heal all. Matthew quotes here from Isaiah 53:4-5 validating that Jesus carried all our infirmities and diseases. 5. The 2 demon-possessed men from the Gadarenes (Mt. 8:28-34). Observations: Jesus specifically and intentionally crossed the lake to go over to this region where these two men were...they were evidently well-known. NOBODY went through there because they were so violent. Immediately in seeing Jesus, the demons in the men asked "What business do we have with each other, Son of God? Have You come here to torment us before the time?" There is no record of Jesus even answering their question. The demons begged Him to send them into the pigs. The only thing Jesus said was "Go!" The people of the city were so afraid that they begged Jesus to leave, which He did. They did NOT respond in worship and believing in Him. The whole CITY implored Him to leave. What a tragedy when Jesus comes and people reject Him like that. This makes me so sad. I love You all the more Jesus for every time You do show up. Blessed are those who do not take offense at You. Uproot my offense when You do things that challenge my comfort and preconceived notions of Who You Are. 6. Paralytic (Mt. 9:2-8). This paralyzed man was literally brought to Jesus on a bed. There's no evidence in the Mt. account that the man himself believed Jesus would heal him. Instead it says, "Seeing THEIR faith, Jesus said to the paralytic, 'Take courage, son; your sins are forgiven.' " I'm perplexed why Jesus first pronounced forgiveness of the man's sins before He healed him. But I'm also amazed at how Jesus responded to the faith of THOSE (plural) who brought the man. He forgave their sins responding to THEIR faith. Of course the scribes thought that was blasphemy. The question of which is easier...to say that your sins are forgive or to say get up and walk...I'd say it's easier to pronounce forgiveness. But so clearly Jesus then made it clear that in order to validate His authority on earth to forgive sins, he told the paralytic to get up and go home. And so he did. The man went away both forgiven AND healed. The two go hand in hand. The scribes were offended at Jesus. I'm often offended at Jesus. His way of things is so radical that, as Graham Cooke says, "It'll blow away all your paradigms of what you think love is." Just to think about that for a minute...God is real. Jesus is real! There's no apology for Jesus being who He is. The constancy of His unchangingness flies in the face of the mocker and the gawker who refuses to believe. Lord uproot my refusal to believe in You at whatever point that exists in my mind. It's important to know that the Holy Spirit resides in us...the SAME One who raised Jesus from the dead. So in the case of this paralytic, it looks to me like a show-and-tell lesson of the authority of the Son of Man on earth. Forgiveness is not a loose thing thrown around. Israel had sought it year after year on the Day of Atonement for centuries. Here the Son of God speaks forgiveness in a sentence...because HE KNOWS at what extent He is about to suffer and offer His life to pay for the sins of that man whom He just forgave. The authority is realized in plain view when the man gets up and walks. The last part of this account (9:8) says this: "But when the crowds saw this, they were awestruck, and glorified God, who had given such authority to men." Jesus healed this paralytic as a MAN walking in the power of the Holy Spirit. MORE OF THIS TO COME...
As you may have heard, myself and two good friends of mine, Troy Krombholz and Maria Little will be coming to Marseille on Sept. 12th, and we will then travel to West Africa together!
